But how?
How does poker even work?
All players who want cards this round put in their ante (or the preset amount for the game).
Every player is dealt two cards, face down. These are called hole or pocket cards.
The player to the left of the dealer starts a round of betting. They can either FOLD, CALL, or RAISE.
Call: match the current bet.
Raise: increase the bet.
Fold: risk no more money by turning in their cards face down and leaving the hand.
The betting continues clockwise around the table until everyone has put in the same amount of money or has folded.
Then, three cards are dealt face up on the table. These are shared cards.
Then another round of betting.
Then, another shared card is added to the table.
Then another round of betting.
Then, the final card is added to the table.
Then, the final round of betting.
Everyone still in the game then shows their cards and the person who can make the highest poker hand out of the 5 shared cards and their 2 personal cards wins the money in the pot!
(Scroll down for poker hand rankings!)
(It is possible for more than one person to have the same hand and then they split the pot!)
Real Talk: You don’t have to know the rules. If you sit at the table the dealer will nicely ask you what you want to do and tell you your options. Then you can just arbitrarily pick one. I really think based on the calibre of players you could go all the way with that strategy…
The Tournament
How Many Chips do we get?
Each player starts with $10,000 in free chips.
I’m bored. Can I give my chips to someone else?
No. Poker chips are non-transferable. Players who don’t need or want their chips must return them to the bank, not give them to another player.
Chips may not be traded for any other goods, including but not limited to real currency, watches, cars, snacks, drinks, favors, as a joke, or for a single night of passion with a player’s significant other.
Woah, isn’t this tournament going to take forever?
No, because we will increase the antes (or minimum bets) at regular time intervals until only the final players remain.
How can I get more chips?
During either of the two long breaks, there will be an opportunity for one REBUY per player, during which, in exchange for a birthday present, you may buy an additional $10,000 in chips. After the last rebuy opportunity, no additional chips may be purchased.
Who are the winners?
At 9:45pm, the three players with the most total chips acquired are the winners. Prizes will follow immediately.
